Five little kittens shared a heartwarming bond with another mama cat at an Ohio humane society while their mom was recovering after being hit by a car.

On Tuesday, a volunteer coordinator at the Toledo Humane Society received a call from someone saying they found a cat that had just been hit by a car.

A cruelty officer arrived at the scene, picked up the injured cat and took her back to the Toledo Humane Society.

It was determined that Maeve, which is what the humane society is calling the cat, had a broken leg and several large wounds on her abdomen. A veterinarian also noticed she was pregnant.

A veterinary team placed a splint on her broken leg. They noticed that several of Maeve’s wounds on her abdomen entered her abdominal cavity, so they decided to perform a C-section on the mother cat. The team did not know what condition the kittens would be in.

The team removed five kittens from the mother that they said were close to full-term. The kittens had to be resuscitated, but were alive and healthy, even after being hit by a car.

The team scheduled a fracture repair next week for Maeve’s leg. They said she still has plenty of healing to do. Because of her abdomen wounds, the team determined that her five babies would not be able to feed on her.

Another cat at the humane society named Turtle was recently surrendered by her owned to the humane society after her owner could not take care of her and her two just-born babies. Turtle’s babies were sent to a foster for specialized care.

Turtle stayed at the humane society and still had a full supply of milk. Humane society staff slowly introduced her to Maeve’s five kittens and they said she was “eager” to welcome them.

“Today, you will find all 5 newborns with big, round bellies full of milk and being showered in affection by a mother that is not theirs by blood but by love,” Toledo Humane Society wrote on Facebook Friday.

The humane society said it will continue to keep the public updated on both cats and their babies.
