Israeli government extends ban that limits public protests

JERUSALEM — The Israeli government has extended an emergency provision that bars public gatherings, including widespread protests against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, for an additional week.

Government ministers approved the measure until Oct. 13 by a telephone vote, the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement late Wednesday.

Israel imposed a nationwide lockdown ahead of the Jewish High Holidays last month to rein in the country’s surging coronavirus outbreak. The Knesset, Israel’s parliament, passed a law last week allowing the government to declare a special week-long state of emergency to limit participation in assemblies because of the pandemic. The government then declared the state of emergency, limiting all public gatherings to within a kilometer (0.6 miles) of a person’s home.

The UK, France and Belgium must respect privacy when carrying out mass surveillance, the European Court of Justice has ruled.

Under the ruling, the ‘general and indiscriminate transmission or retention of traffic data and location data’ is banned.

The personal data of phone and internet users can only be handed over to security services where there is a serious threat to national security, it says. The retention should be ‘limited in time to what is strictly necessary’, and effective safeguards and an independent review system need to be in place.

JERUSALEM (Reuters) – Israel’s parliament approved a government-backed edict on Wednesday likely to stifle protests against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over alleged corruption and his handling of the coronavirus crisis.

The legislation, ratified after an all-night debate in the Knesset, bans Israelis from holding demonstrations more than 1 km (0.6 miles) from their homes, a measure the government said was aimed at curbing COVID-19 infections.

Critics of the new measure, which becomes part of Israel’s second national lockdown that went into effect on Sept. 18, said it was really intended to block protests near Netanyahu’s official residence in Jerusalem.
